Sophia Whitesell

Where did you attend school/college/university?

Central Methodist University and Mercy College of Nursing and Health Sciences

Were there any significant experiences or influences during your education that shaped your career or personal life?

I actually started out majoring in Criminal Justice and wanted to be a lawyer. I had my son, and he was a month premature. We were in the NICU for weeks because he had a collapsed lung. I fell in love with the nurses who took care of my son, and I decided that I wanted to do that for other families and patients.

What is your current job title and role?

Director of Nursing

Can you describe your career journey and key milestones?

I started out my career working in the hospital in the pediatric department. I worked in Pediatrics, Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, and Mother Baby Units. Then, my hometown nursing home offered me a day shift position. I never thought I would enjoy working in a long-term care facility, but it turned out to be my passion in life. I started out as a charge nurse, got promoted to MDS Coordinator, then became the assistant director of nursing, and eventually became a director of nursing. I have been at Lawrence County Manor since January 2023 and absolutely fell in love with the residents!

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I’m a mother of a 10-year-old son, a 6-year-old son, and a 2-year-old daughter. They take up a considerable amount of time. I love being a mother! It’s my favorite job on earth. I love spending time with friends and family. I’m a bit of a shopaholic. I love anything water-related… put me on the lake, river, or any pool and I’ll be a happy camper. I love to travel when I have the time. My bucket list trip would be backpacking through Europe!

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be and why?

Kim Kardashian because I love trash TV.

Princess Diana because I’ve been obsessed with her since I was a kid.

Anna Wintour because she’s a boss and my idol.
